About this worksheet
โA Short Story: Sam and the Hatโ is sheet 22 of 30 in our free Kindergarten Reading & Writing Worksheets collection, written for children aged 5โ6. It focuses on story questions.
In the set it comes after โRead and Draw: At the Parkโ and before โOpposite Wordsโ. Working through them in that order, one sheet a day, builds the skill a step at a time.
What this worksheet practices
RL.K.1 ยท Common Core English Language Arts ยท Kindergarten
Reading: Literature ยท Key ideas and details
Children work on reading closely, asking and answering questions about the text, and pointing to the details that show the answer.
How to use this worksheet
- 1
Work the sound sheets in order: beginning sounds, then ending sounds, then CVC. Middle vowel sounds are the hardest to hear, so they come last for a reason.
- 2
Sight words are memorised, not sounded out. Five minutes a day beats one long session โ these are the words like "the" and "said" that break phonics rules, and they only stick with repetition.
- 3
On "Clap the Syllables", clap with your child rather than watching. Syllable awareness is physical before it is intellectual, and joining in gives them the beat to copy.
- 4
Keep "Draw and Label". It is the first writing task with a real purpose, and children who label their own drawings start writing sentences noticeably sooner.
