About these kindergarten reading & writing worksheets
These kindergarten reading and writing worksheets move a child from letters to actual reading: hunting letters A-Z, alphabetical order, uppercase and lowercase, isolating beginning and ending sounds, building and blending CVC words like cat and pin, short a and short i, rhyming, sight words, naming and action words, building a sentence, clapping syllables, reading a sentence and drawing it, and writing a labelled drawing. Every sheet prints its Common Core code.
CVC words are the milestone here. A child who can blend the three sounds in "cat" into a word has crossed from knowing letters to reading, and four of these sheets are arranged to build up to it — sounds, then blending, then sight words for the words that do not follow the rules.

How to get the most out of them

Work the sound sheets in order: beginning sounds, then ending sounds, then CVC. Middle vowel sounds are the hardest to hear, so they come last for a reason.

Sight words are memorised, not sounded out. Five minutes a day beats one long session — these are the words like "the" and "said" that break phonics rules, and they only stick with repetition.

On "Clap the Syllables", clap with your child rather than watching. Syllable awareness is physical before it is intellectual, and joining in gives them the beat to copy.

Keep "Draw and Label". It is the first writing task with a real purpose, and children who label their own drawings start writing sentences noticeably sooner.

- What are CVC words and why do they matter?
- Consonant-vowel-consonant words such as cat, pin and mud. They are the simplest words that can be sounded out, so blending them is the moment a child moves from knowing letters to reading. The CVC sheet here is aligned to RF.K.2.E.
- Should a kindergartener be reading by the end of the year?
- They should be reading simple CVC words and recognising common sight words on sight, not reading books independently. If your child can blend cat, sun and pig, they are where the standards expect.
- Are these aligned to Common Core?
- Yes — RF.K.1, RF.K.2 and RF.K.3 for foundational reading skills, L.K.1 for language and W.K.2 for writing. Each code is printed on its sheet.
