About these 2nd grade math worksheets

These ten 2nd grade math worksheets cover the year the arithmetic gets real: fluency within 20, even and odd, place value to 1,000, two-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping, skip counting, counting money, telling time to five minutes, reading a bar graph, and two-step word problems. Each sheet carries its Common Core code in the corner.

Regrouping is the hinge of second grade. Two of these sheets are built around it, and the place-value sheet before them exists specifically so that "carrying" is understood as exchanging ten ones for one ten rather than as a rule about moving a small digit.

How to get the most out of them

  1. 1

Do "Hundreds, Tens and Ones" before either regrouping sheet. A child who can say that 47 is four tens and seven ones will understand carrying; a child who cannot will memorise a procedure and forget it over the summer.

  2. 2

On "Counting Money", use real coins alongside the page. Coin values are arbitrary facts — the only way in is handling them.

  3. 3

For "Two-Step Word Problems", ask "what do we need to find out first?" before any calculation. Naming the hidden first step is the entire skill; the arithmetic is already easy by this point.

  4. 4

Print "Reading a Bar Graph" even if it looks easy. Data questions are heavily represented on second-grade assessments and are the ones children have practised least.

2nd Grade Math Worksheets — questions parents ask

What is the hardest part of 2nd grade maths?
Regrouping in two-digit subtraction, and two-step word problems. Both are in this set. Regrouping becomes straightforward once place value is secure, which is why the place-value sheet is numbered before it.
Do these cover addition and subtraction with regrouping?
Yes — "Two-Digit Addition" and "Two-Digit Subtraction", both aligned to 2.NBT.B.5, with the place-value sheet (2.NBT.A.1, 2.NBT.A.3) as the prerequisite.
Are these suitable for a 3rd grader who is behind?
Yes. Nothing on the sheets marks them as second grade to the child, and the regrouping, money and time pages are the usual gaps for a struggling third grader. Start with place value and work down the list in order.
