About these pre-k alphabet tracing worksheets

These Pre-K alphabet tracing worksheets give every uppercase letter from A to Z a page of its own, then add lowercase letters a to z and a full-alphabet review. Each uppercase page opens with the letter and a picture word — A is for Apple, B is for Bee — then a row of pre-writing strokes built from that letter, and two rows of dotted letters to trace; the lowercase pages do the same for three letters at a time on handwriting lines.

The strokes come before the letter on purpose. A child who can already pull a straight line down and a curve round has the parts of "B" in their hand before they meet it, so the tracing rows become practice rather than a struggle. Pre-K sits below the Common Core, so these follow the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework.

How to get the most out of them

    Say the sound of the letter as the child traces it, and point at the picture. "Buh, bee" ties the shape to the sound, which is the part that transfers to reading.

    Let the stroke row be finished properly before the letters. If the curves are wobbly, the letter rows will be too — repeat the strokes rather than pushing on.

  3. 3

    One or two letters a day is enough. The uppercase pages are roughly a month of short sessions; start the lowercase pages once the capitals feel easy.

    Laminate a page or open it in the online studio and trace with a finger first, then with a pencil.

What age are alphabet tracing worksheets for?
Ages 3 to 5, Pre-K. A child who can hold a crayon and draw a rough line down can start with the stroke rows; the dotted letters follow once those feel easy.
Should I teach the letters in alphabetical order?
It is not necessary. Many teachers start with the letters made only of straight lines — L, T, E, F, H, I — because they are easiest to form, then move to curves. Every page stands on its own, so print them in any order.
Are lowercase letters included?
