About these counting to 10 worksheets

These counting worksheets take a three-to-five-year-old from counting three apples to writing the number for a group of ten. They start with the smallest groups, where a child can check the answer by touching each picture, and only move to six through ten once one to five is steady.

Counting to ten out loud and counting ten objects are different skills. Most Pre-K children can recite the numbers long before they can point to each object exactly once, and that one-to-one match is what every sheet here practises.

What this covers

  • Counting groups of 1, 2 and 3 and circling the matching number
  • Counting groups of 4 and 5
  • Matching a written number to the group with that many objects
  • Counting groups of 6 to 10 and writing the number
  • One-to-one correspondence: touching each object once while counting

Tips for parents

  1. 1

Have your child touch every picture as they say its number. Skipping one or counting one twice is the most common mistake at this age, and a finger on the page catches it.

  2. 2

Print "Count and Circle: 1, 2, 3" first even if your child can count higher. Getting small groups right quickly builds the confidence the 6 to 10 sheet needs.

  3. 3

Before "Count and Write: 6 - 10", count real things to ten together — spoons, socks, steps. The sheet goes better once the numbers have meant something.

  4. 4

Stop after one sheet. Two focused minutes teach more than twenty tired ones.

Counting to 10 Worksheets — questions parents ask

At what age should a child count to 10?
Most children count objects to ten reliably between four and five. Reciting the numbers usually comes earlier; matching one number to each object is the part that takes practice, and it is what these sheets work on.
My child can say 1 to 20 but gets these sheets wrong. Why?
Saying the numbers in order is a memory skill; counting a group needs a child to match each number to exactly one object and know that the last number said is how many there are. Slow down, point together, and start with the 1 to 3 sheet.
Should my child write the numbers or just circle them?
Circle first. The first three sheets need no writing, so counting is not held back by pencil control. "Count and Write: 6 - 10" adds writing once counting is secure — the number tracing sheets in the same set help with that.
