About these 2nd grade logic & problem solving worksheets

These 2nd grade logic and problem-solving worksheets give second graders puzzles that take real thinking: a 4 × 4 logic grid, number pattern rules, addition pyramids, shape algebra, a number Venn diagram, which-one-does-not-belong reasoning, place value mystery numbers, writing code to avoid obstacles, 6 × 6 sudoku and four-step word problems.

The math follows the Common Core 2nd grade standards — skip-counting by 5s, 10s and 100s (2.NBT.A.2), place value to 1,000 (2.NBT.A.1), adding and subtracting within 100 (2.NBT.B.5, 2.OA.B.2), odd and even (2.OA.C.3) and two-step word problems (2.OA.A.1) — and the puzzles practise perseverance (MP.1), argument (MP.3) and precision (MP.6).

How to get the most out of them

    Let your child talk through the logic grid out loud. Saying "Noah has kites, so nobody else has kites" is exactly the reasoning the grid records.

  2. 2

    On "Which One Does Not Belong?", challenge your child to find a reason for every choice. There is no single answer, and arguing for one is the skill.

  3. 3

    Use the four-step boxes for homework word problems too. The "check" step is where most second-grade errors get caught.

Are these too hard for 2nd grade?
They are meant to be a stretch. Each sheet starts with an easier item — the first pyramid, the first shape equation — before the challenge. Doing one puzzle well is better than rushing through all of them.
How do logic puzzles help with math?
Puzzles such as shape algebra and addition pyramids practise the same addition and subtraction as a drill sheet, but a child has to decide what to do first. Planning the steps is the part of problem solving that timed drills never practise.
