Use child-safe scissors and show the "thumb on top" grip. Cutting a straight line is the first goal; curves come later.

Short crayons encourage a better grip than long ones — snap a crayon in half for tracing sheets.

- What are fine motor skills?
- The control of small muscles in the hands and fingers used for cutting, drawing and later writing. Strong fine motor skills make handwriting much easier in kindergarten.
- When should my child start using scissors?
- Most children are ready for supervised snipping around age three and for cutting along a line by four or five. Start with the straight-line sheet.
